Last Day for Little City

littlecity.jpgYou can blame higher rent, blame Starbucks, or blame the cheapness of college students, but Little City on Guadalupe is serving their last cup of coffee tonight when the shop -- a Drag mainstay for over ten years -- will close its doors for the last time. This west campus sidewalk café is the latest in an already high number of coffee shops that just can’t compete on the Drag anymore.

Donna Taylor, owner of Little City, will focus on selling Little City Coffee on the wholesale market. While the space on Guadalupe will be turned into a Chinese restaurant, Little City on Congress will remain open for business.

Little City perfected what was wanted in a coffee shop—great drinks and an even better atmosphere. On the heavily-trafficked streets of Guadalupe, just south of 27th, Little City provided its customers with an ambiance no one could rival. Little City will be open until 8pm tonight if you feel like staring out the window, lounging on a plush couch or sitting on the gravel patio one last time.

Little City (closes at 8pm)
2604 Guadalupe St.

  • Paul,

Thanks. Phew. That was close. Almost lost it there. Good thing there's people like you around.

"like an urbanite" because people actually WALK past instead of drive past in cars. Foot traffic. You know, people walking down the street? Like they have in grown up cities?

I'm sure you think what makes you more-urban-then-whatever is your willingness to be a dick for no reason, but my guess is they can do that in the suburbs, too.

"I'm not a big one for mourning stuff like this -- but sitting on LC's streetside patio made me feel like a honest-to-goodness urbanite."

sitting on guadalupe makes you feel like an urbanite? that is just pathetic. get a grip.

I used to go to Little City "back in the day". But their coffee has been NASTY SWILL for a few years now. I switched to Progress Coffee on E. 5th St shortly after they opened. They have outdoor seating, albeit on a much less busy road, and they serve damn good coffee. Maybe Little City could learn a few things from them ...

Just remember, the insertion of more people and national chains is good for Austin. maybe the new owner will tear it down and build condos and put a Starbucks and a gap on the first floor.

  • I'm not a big one for mourning stuff like this -- but sitting on LC's streetside patio made me feel like a honest-to-goodness urbanite.

Other than Jo's on SoCo or 2nd, are there any other places like this in Austin -- where you can drink coffee and watch people walk by?

  • A friend just sent me a link to this. I'm living in Portland now (where good coffee shops never die, it seems), but damnit, I loved the Guadalupe LC (especially when it was up on 34th). I think I might have to sit down and have a little cry... :(
