Austin Film Society's Essential Cinema to Focus on Joseph Losey
Austin Film Society has announced the first Essential Cinema of its new 2006-2007 season, "Surviving the Blacklist: Joseph Losey in Europe."
The six-week series that runs each Tuesday from Sept. 5 through Tuesday, Oct. 10 at the Alamo Drafthouse focuses on Joseph Losey, a director who was targeted by the government for being a commie and then put on the Black List as he fled to Europe.
[From AFS]
During the second wave of anti-Communist hearings by the House Committee on Un-American Activities in 1951, a subpoena was issued for Hollywood filmmaker Joseph Losey to appear in Washington, DC. Instead of waiting around to be served the summons, Losey and his wife took an extended vacation in Europe.
Admission is free for new or current AFS members and $4 for non-members. Go to the AFS site to find out how to become a member or to purchase individual tickets.
