Newsflash! A Deli Opens Near Campus that Isn't a Chain!

Now this is a good idea: Just in time for the start of classes (that'd be today), Fricano's Deli opened this month in small space carved out right next to North Campus mainstay Speedway Market. Our affinity for Speedway developed during a college affair of convenience. It had beer. We lived nearby. The rest is history. We'll have to see if Fricano's proves similarly convenient since we've just moved back into the same 'hood.

They're off to a good start. While we've only stopped in once and the place still has that getting-off-the-ground newness to it, the owner seemed friendly, there was interesting art on the wall, and the menu offers an excellent selection of meats. They also serve hot sandwiches (a particularly weakness of ours), including meatball subs and Chicago-style hotdogs. Our first trip we went veg and tried a Caprese sandwich. Very fresh mozzarella, basil, and tomato; good stuff. Give it a shot, let us know what you think. If business is strong, they may stay open late on weekends. That would be sweet.

Glad to see that your deli is up and running. Would like to hear from one of the Fricano bros. 903-908-2924. I wish you great success.

This place is totally AWESOME!!! Daily specials, fresh food - my favorites are the caprice sandwich, the super-delicious carrot cake and let me just say that they make the best damn turkey sandwich in all of Austin. The staff is so friendly that even if it's your first time to visit, they make you feel like you're an old friend. A refreshing local alternative to all the boring chain sandwich shops, Fricano's deli will keep you coming back for more.

It is fabulous. Food so fresh. Chicken salad sandwich wonderful, try it with grapes. The most exquiste carrot cake in the world. Really nice people, very efficient, friendly, great service. Can you tell, I think it is a great addition to the campus area.

I liked my visit there. Everything is really fresh, and the tucked away location is nice. It helps that everyone that worked there seemed nice - which is almost a luxury in Austin.

I'm so glad you wrote about this Matt...This place is a block from my house and they are real nice people (and student-friendly with the coupons). Great place to stop in on your bike for a sandwhich after a day of class.
