From the Far East to the East Side

First things first. Alamo Drafthouse EAT DRINK WATCH MOVIES events pretty much always kick ass, but the bar just may have been raised with the upcoming showing of Stephen Chow’s God of Cookery, loosely based on Japanese wundershow Iron Chef. Alamo South Lamar Exec Chef John Bullington and Alamo Village Exec Chef Trish Eichelberger face off Wednesday, August 30 at 7pm at The Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar. The stakes? The title of Alamo Iron Chef 2006.
For $75, attendees will enjoy a series of 5 dishes and petite wine pairings – from both contestants. If you think you can handle it, click here for more info.
Proceeds benefit the Capital Area Food Bank.

Over at Gina’s Kitchen, private Chef Judd Servidio is warming up for his French Interactive Cooking Class on Sunday, September 10 at 1:00 p.m. Chef Judd teaches his classes ringside, his students doing most of the prep work. This means you too can learn to throw together a simple poached pear stuffed with bleu cheese topped with port glaze and greens or a little old peppercorn crusted duck breast with forbidden black rice and lapsang souchan broth.

Timothy Graham over at Twin Liquors wants to take you on a (figurative) tour of Italy this Saturday – for FREE. Mmm-hmm! From 2-6pm, stop in and let one of our favorite wine-pushers turn you on to his current Italian favorites - Capriccio, Cerri del Palagio Chianti Classico Riserva 2000 and Zenato Ripassa.

A little fixture on the northwest side for six years, Ms. B’s Authentic Creole Restaurant has moved downtown to East 11th Street, banishing East Side Café’s ranking as the only good date restaurant east of I-35. Ms. B’s ain’t cheap – a shared entrée (snapper served on cheese grits), sweet potato fries, crab cakes with creole sauce and yellow pepper mayonnaise, two glasses of wine and an order of bread pudding with lemon sauce and chantilly cream cost about $70 with tax and tip. Here’s the good news: the space is charming and intimate, the service is almost over-attentive, the wine by the glass is actually worth the price thanks to great selections and a heavy-handed pour, and the flavors are all solid and unique. In this case, it’s not cliché when we tell you - don’t skip dessert.
