Dance, Sucka!

We’re not exactly inundated with new shows opening this weekend, but there’s a couple of notable events to keep the proverbial party hoppin’ and your metaphorical booty shakin’. Shakin’ modern dance style, that is. Werd.

Big ups to our Austinist Pick of the Week, Calyx Dance Co’s Danscopia. These kids are fresh meat in Austin’s growing modern dance scene, but the initial buzz is good. Our girlfriend caught the second half of the company’s dress rehearsal and made comparisons to Kathy Dunn Hamrick. That’s high praise, homeslice. Looks like we can expect good things. Danscopia runs Friday and Saturday only at the Dougherty Arts Center at 7pm (not 8pm, 7pm – pay attention to the start time or you’re likely to miss the first half of the show…trust us). Reservations and more info at the Calyx website.

And speaking of dance, if you’re a little slutty when it comes to performance (and hey ladies, now you can afford to be), Dance Umbrella has the event for you. 10 Minutes Max, a smattering of new, emerging and established artists presenting pieces 10 minutes or less, runs tonight and tomorrow at the Boyd Vance Theatre. It’s fun, it’s wild, it’s fast – and if it sucks, it’s only 10 min. Tickets and info at Dance Umbrella’s cave du intertron.

Lastly, Greg Romero’s Dandelion Momma is gettin’ a workshop this weekend from the Yellow Tape Construction Co. The show runs Friday and Saturday only, and is part of Yellow Tape’s new Groundplans initiative. 8pm. Silica House. Free. Check out our preview post/interview here, or go play on Yellow Tape’s bitchin’ blog. [Full disclosure, we, along with Amanda Butterfield, are the Yellow Tape Construction Co – take that for what it’s worth.]

For all the shows still running from last weekend, check out last week’s TWIT.
