Guest ColumnIST: The Laurie Show

We've asked KUT's Laurie Gallardo, host of Before the Break and a new local music program on Friday evenings, to join our staff as a guest contributor. She'll be sharing with us the many Austin- and Texas-based bands that she's been listening to. Enjoy! -- The Editors

Greetings, kids. The week has flown by, and it’s already time for another round of what I call The Laurie Show. That’s not the name of my gig at KUT, but it’ll do for now.

I delight in the fact that there’s been quite a handful of CD’s arriving in the mail for me, which gives me the wonderful dilemma of having an overwhelming amount of music to choose from. Yay for that! Here’s a sneaky peek, chock full of recommendations and assorted madness:

As you know, the number one Laurie rule is emphasis on the local peeps. I’ll feature more music from the Happy Families, Tacks the Boy Disaster, the Lord Henry, Xcella, Go Nova and Crawling with Kings. Still having a field day picking tracks from Rachel Goldstar, Bellaparker, the Lovely Sparrows, Peel and For Those Who Know

I’ll toss in music from The Unbearables since I am on zombie-watch. Be expecting their zombie rock opera onstage very soon. What a great Halloween vibe that will bring!

Speaking of things wonderfully eerie, it will be my great pleasure to share music with you from the Tuna Helpers. That appeals to my darker sensibilities, kids. I think a good dose of Joy Division and “Third Uncle” from Bauhaus might conveniently find their way onto the playlist, if I’m still in that mode…

Did you catch the Caroline Casey track last week? Expect more of her swingin’ music this Friday night as well.

I’m also delighted to present music from other parts: Irving and Letting Up Despite Great Faults, both from L.A.; Ennui, from San Francisco; and Your Heart Breaks, a great little outfit out of Seattle that I saw at Jesse’s Bed and Breakfast a few weeks back.

I eagerly anticipate music from The Standards, all the way from London. Guitarist/vocalist Neil Winspear has graciously put a CD in the post for me…

And some important reminders go out to some local peeps:

  • Midori Umi, I need those CD’s!
  • Attention Peter and the Wolf – I still need the track list for “Experiments In Junk,” otherwise it sounds goofy when I say, “That was from Peter and the Wolf. I don’t know the name of that song, but…I played it anyway ‘cause I like it and stuff.” No, sir, that won’t do.

Too much music to mention, too little time! For the complete experience, tune in to KUT 90.5 FM this Friday, 11 p.m. to 3 in the frickin’ morning. Same bat time, same bat channel. As RoboCop would say: Thank you for your cooperation.

    Laurie is great.

Thanks for introducing me to Letting Up Despite Great Faults. Hopefully they will come to Austin sometime.

Laurie! You're the best! And since you mentioned The Unbearables and The Tunahelpers in such close proximity to each other, I wanted to let you know that The Tuna Helpers will be playing at the listening party for 'Just One Bite', which is The Unbearables' upcoming release- selections from the rock opera- on September 7th. And it's free. So you should come!
