Flicker Film Fest Returns to the Alamo Drafthouse Tonight
Tonight at the Alamo Drafthouse the Flicker Film Festival celebrates the creativity, passion and art of short filmmaking. The Flicker Fest is a great way for nascent filmmakers to get their works screened. All of the movies in competition are shorts that run no longer than 15 minutes and must have originally been shot on film.
“Flicker is a totally Austin experience. It’s fun, it’s cheap, it’s independent, and it’s creative,” explains Matthew Cornelius, HBMG Foundation’s Artistic Development Coordinator. “That is why we want the audience to grow and keep returning, so that they continue to discover new, exciting voices and leave feeling enriched and inspired.”
Flicker Fest accepts submissions from all over the world, but much of the idea is to give Austin filmmakers a chance to have their work seen. Often for the first time. One of the shorts being screened tonight is a film entitled “Closing Time,” a continuous loop of a conversation that illustrates the inherent challenges in cross-gender communication.
Serving as hosts and retired film critics extraordinaire, the D.R.A.G.O.N. Squad, an Austin-based improv troupe, will guide the audience through the night’s events. The D.R.A.G.O.N. Squad is made of up former members of Ed 32 and the Polite Society. Curtis Luciani, core member of the D.R.A.G.O.N. Squad, said "[We] could not be more thrilled to be hosting this August's Flicker Film Festival, having already been banned for life from the Cannes, Sundance, Slamdance, Venice, Toronto, Vancouver, and Tulsa Film Festivals. We commend the organizers of Flicker for having the courage to make this choice, and we look forward to seeing what raw and shining talents have set their cameras whirring here in Austin.”
And, as with almost any Flicker event, expect some raffle booty from the likes of Flipnotics, the Alamo, Cap City Comedy Club and Birds Barbershop. And, since it wouldn't be a festival without the participation of you - the audience - make sure you vote on your favorites at the end of the night. The winners will take part in the Best of Flicker at the end of the year.
