Dirty Little Secrets: Austinist Reviews Sodomy and Pedicures

hedrick.jpg Jessica Hedrick is a dirty thief. She broke into the collective female consciousness, stole a bunch of the hidden, unpublished note cards that detail our deepest, darkest secrets, and crafted a wicked, hilarious little tour de force out of them. Sodomy and Pedicures: A Pinko Feminazi Confesses tells the past, present, and potential future of a mixed up, thirty-something feminist. And, okay, the work is great and all, but really. Shouldn't some things remain unspoken?

Well ... no. Not if speaking them is as effective as Hedrick's one-woman show, playing for three more nights only at the play! Theatre. Seriously, we did feel as if our most private teenage and young adult moments had been plundered and were being played out, to outstanding effect, on stage. It was eerie. But that was one of the amazing things about Sodomy and Pedicures; it's brash, irreverent, and honest as the day is long.

Another amazing thing: Hedrick is a great performer. Animated, fresh, and direct, she pulls you into her world with effortless ease. At times we wanted to say, out loud, "Uh, say Jessica, could you crawl back over to the other side of the fourth wall now...please??" If you haven't figured it out, S&P covers some sacred ground, from adolescent masturbation to the internal diatribe we all have against everything wretchedly wrong with women these days, and Hedrick holds nothing back. It made us a little squirmy in our seats, truth be told, but it was a delightful kind of squirm -- the kind that erupts with a big, belly laugh.

It's rare for a performer to hit this kind of home run with us -- and for a little longer than an hour, all at once, the whole hour long. We'd wax rhapsodic about it for just as long, but there's not much else to say that hasn't already been brought up by a few of her more outspoken fans. Plus our excellent interview with Ms. Hedrick (if we do say so ourselves) will give you a perfect sampling of what's in store -- in all its up-close, personal, live-action best -- during performance.

So, in short, do yourself a favor. Don't miss your chance to check out this wonderful morsel of theatre goodness before it's packed up and flown back to NYC for good. You owe it to yourself to indulge in this great time, and you'll regret it if you miss it. We know we would have.
