Austinist Giveaway: Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players at Cactus Cafe, Next Tuesday
Billing themselves as an "indie-vaudeville-conceptual-art-rock-slideshow" band, the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players are a quirky -- if not downright hilarious -- mom, pop, and daughter trio who create and perform songs about random slides found at garage sales, vintage shops, estate sales, and other places where vintage archival flotsam might be procured.
Frontman, guitarist, pianist, and father Jason Trachtenburg leads mother Tina Piña (slide projectionist, backup singer) and 12-year-old daughter Rachel (drums, vocals) through intricate sets that talk about everything from fast food corporations to eggs to "enjoying fondue in Switzerland." In other words, nearly anything from their slide archives -- of which there are anywhere between "five to seven thousand" -- is fair game. Comedian David Cross, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Jason Trachtenburg, remarked of the trio, "When i first saw the band, I said, well, what a cool concept. I wanted the life of either the kid or the dad. Either one. Either one is fine with me. All they need to do is start making their own honey, and that's it, they're done."
Trivia bits of note: Jason refuses to use both cell phones and microwave ovens, which Tina Piña used to schlep salsa in grocery stores. Both resided together in Austin for a brief period of time before moving to Seattle, where Rachel was born.
Enter below for your chance to win a pair of tickets to their show at the Cactus Cafe next Tuesday, as well as a copy of their new DVD, The Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players: Off & On Broadway!
