Texas Suits Make Us Play Nice

texasfanslogotext.jpgIs it a coincidence that one day after The University of Texas is named #1 Party School In The Nation, the school offers a campaign aimed at tackling drunk and inappropriate fan behavior?

Because, in a few days when the defending National Champion Texas Longhorns take the field to defend their title against North Texas, you, your buddies and that obnoxious frat boy behind you will be asked to be a little nicer when a) making fun of UNT after freshman Colt McCoy leads us to an impressive first-game victory or b) when cursing freshman Colt McCoy after he fumbles his first run.

Texas Fans Make Us Proud, meant to be pronounced as a fact and a request, is the new brainchild of a campus-wide committee of staff, students and alumni groups. The campaign will use all ways and means to remind Texas fans to play nice when cheering on their team and is meant to “create a safe and positive environment for recruits, student athletes, coaches, media, alumni and fans.” This “nationwide emphasis on sportsmanship” will encompass every form of media the very well funded Texas Exes have at their disposal, including banners, cups, shirts, napkins, jumbotrons, blimps, buses.

The guidelines and suggestions for fans to contribute to the sportsmanship initiative include:
1. Monitoring your alcohol consumption.
2. Treating visiting players, cheerleaders, band members and fans with respect and warmly welcome them to Austin.
3. Being aware that your actions have an impact on children. Foul language and demeaning comments toward the opposing team are unacceptable.
4. Informing ushers if you see inappropriate fan behavior.
5. Being a passionate fan. Support your team with enthusiasm.

Just like Don’t Mess With Texas won’t stop people from littering on I-35 and Keep Austin Weird won’t stop Walgreens from destroying moving Taco X-Press, this campaign might not deter beer-throwing, obscenity-flying fans. But it's surely a step in the right direction for a school reeling from the dubious but dreaded #1 Party School ranking.
