Austinist Music Preview: New Release Tuesday

It's Tuesday, August 22, so hang on to your wallets, kids, there's some great new music out today.
Cursive Happy Hollow (Saddle Creek)
Tim Kasher's Cursive has delivered what appears to be a sort of homage to The Wizard of Oz with this album, featuring songs like "Dorothy Dreams of Tornadoes" and "Dorothy at 40" . The concept here centers around the sleepy town of Happy Hollow and its assembly of players: priests, boys on the verge of war, and teenagers coming into their own sexuality. Cursive fans will notice the lack of cello (Greta Cohn left the band last year), but Kasher has replaced her with a horns section. We'll leave it to you to decide if it works.

Kelis Kelis Was Here (Jive)
Mrs. Nas (she'd hate that) got us on the playground for her milkshakes, but now that we're an item she's asserting her individuality with "Bossy". Kelis Was Here is rumored to feature diverse instrumentation, opera-like vocals and (naturally) the catchy, thump-soaked and remix-ready tracks we've come to expect from the darling of femme rap.
Amy Millan Honey From the Tombs (Arts & Crafts)
Millan, a member of the Canadian music collective Broken Social Scene as well as being an integral player in Stars, so no one should really be surprised that her album is getting great reviews and long-time fans are thrilled. Honey From the Tomb is a graceful trip through pop-glazed country tunes and sentimental (in the sweet and the bittersweet sense) lyrics, sure to please any Arts & Crafts or Millanophile.
Of Montreal Satanic Twins (Polyvinyl)
Just as frontman Kevin Barnes mentioned when we interviewed him a few months ago, Of Montreal's finally put out their vinyl-only remix album. The project, which took nearly two years to complete, features a dozen other artists -- Mixel Pixel, I Am the World Trade Center, and Grizzly Bear, just to name a few -- remixing songs from Of Montreal's last two albums, Satanic Panic in the Attic and The Sunlandic Twins. If you can't get ahold of one of the LPs (only 2,000 were pressed), you can always find the tracks on iTunes and eMusic.

More local love this week in the Shouldn't Miss section. Psychedelic pop, country and pop melodies fill this excellent C-Side release, and the live show shouldn't be missed. Check out their My Space for mp3s and updates on where you can catch them play.

DUDES, the new M. Ward came out today!
It's amazing! He's amazing! Get it!
Get Lamb Of God's "Sacrament". It's a great metal album.
I love New Release Tuesday.
I'm not sure how much I like that new Cursive record. The first time through I thought, "hmm...well that sucked". But maybe it gets better after repeated listens.
Oh, one more thing that could go on the list - the new Burn To Shine DVD was just released yesterday. I saw it at Music Mondays this week, and liked it a lot. Decemberists, Sleater Kinney, Thermals (who I'd never heard before, but liked), The Gossip, Quasi, The Shins and more, all playing one song in a house scheduled for demolition later that day. GTs.
I think you chose the wrong releases to spotlight here - the gems this week are the Mountain Goats album, the Broadcast b-sides collection, and the Tortoise box set.
