Do The Bright Thing: The Sustainable Shopper’s Ball Returns This Weekend

Kermit the Frog was right: It’s not easy being green. We find it extremely difficult to “think green” when the 100-degree heat is turning everything brown. The truth is, despite the current crisping of our landscape, Austin holds its own in its greenness as one of the most environmentally conscientious cities in the world.

Some Austinites who have made this passion for green living their way of life are assembling tomorrow. Hosted by the Sunset Valley Farmers Market -- voted as one of the top 10 by Audubon Magazine in 2006 -- The Sustainable Shopper’s Ball promises music, organic food, dance, hands-on art, learning, fun and sun for all ages.

Billed as an “all-Austin” extravaganza, 65 local vendors, non-profit groups and educators will showcase their products and ideas on how to keep Austin green in spite of exponential growth. Their goal is to make Austin the “Green Living Capitol of the World” through education and resource identification. Business owners running successful green businesses will share their wisdom on creating these harmonious and ecologically friendly endeavors, and how being green is good for business.

Welcoming the sun tomorrow will be the solar-powered musicians of the Acoustic Music Café, including The Dave playing classic rock, The Ukelizers who perform Hendrix covers on ukuleles, Perfectly Safe Penguins described as “the spawn of some local name-musicians who are pretty darn talented, too,” as well as Max & Henry an “energetic duo, beyond explanation.”

This is the fourth and largest sustainable shoppers event for 2006, and just like the best things in life, it too is free.

The organizers have arranged for misters and additional shade. If the weatherman is correct, tomorrow is going to be the first day under 100 in almost a month. Wear the SPF!

dogs are definately welcome. there's a lot of concrete, but there's also a lot of shade. check out the tasty organic dog treats made by 'bark for peace' - they're not just just for four-leggers.

  • Dude. DO NOT GO TO THIS IF YOU'RE A LATE RISER. That huge parking lot was hot when we went in like April; I suspect vegetables will be bursting into flames there tomorrow.

anyone know if canines are welcome? austin tends to be a dog friendly town but i hate to assume...
