Local boys 1986 are today's Spin.com Artist of the Day. The 70s-inspired rock trio, consisting of Giorgio Angelini (vocals/guitar), Drew Pennebaker (bass), and Cully Symington (drums), released their first full-length, Nihilism is Nothing To Worry About, just last month. Rock and Roll Report Review calls it a "great rockin record that maintains its indie cred without getting in the way of being classic rock and roll," while UK mag Losing Today -- despite knowing "absolutely diddly squat in terms of information on this lot" -- calls it the "sound of a band on fire, having fun and bearing a bucketful of spanking tunes set to whip your hi-fi in shape."
Angelini is one of the mad maestros behind the annual Eastside Scootenanny, the ridiculous weekend SXSW party at Red's Scoot Inn, while Symington divides his time between 1986 and Zykos. Currently, the guys are wrapping up a tour that ends in St. Paul, Minnesota, this weekend.

A vintage Statesman article gleaned from their Myspace page reveals drummer Symington as something of a child music star: "On drums, 12-year-old Cully Symington, with braces on his teeth and a ball cap embroidered with the name of his favorite band (No Use Use For a Name), hits hard and fast, causing doubletakes at this small-of-stature, big-of-sound kid behind the set." Awwww.
