Lo, and There Was Fiery Vegan Mocha

Dhaba Joy, the new vegan coffee shop adjoined to the presumably vegan Toy Joy (at the corner of 29th and Guadalupe), soft-opened last week. A piously-decorated interior — read: nuns amok — is a perfect complement to its neighbor, as are the truly odd menu offerings. The coffee-shop staples are all there, of course, but these sisters also make one hot cup of coffee. As in spicy. Their "fire mocha" ain't joking: it'll leave your tongue slightly burning. We can't say we've ever had anything like it. Only a Michelada comes close, but there's a distinct difference between cold and carbonated versus hot and sweet.

Soft-serve vegan ice cream also sounds intriguing, so you can expect to see us at the grand opening in the near future. We'll keep you posted.

Anything beats that ugly Subway that was there before.

  • The chairs are actually more comfortable than they look, but the place seemed definitely geared toward people stopping in to get a drink while at Toy Joy rather than posting up for hours to study, a la Spider House.

Thanks for the last picture of the inside of the shop. What a shame they have uncomfortable looking chairs that would make hanging out pleasant.
