There are dubious Hatches, like Survivor Winner Richard Hatch (BOO!). And there are good Hatches, like the delicious namesake chile peppers grown in Hatch, New Mexico (YAY!).
The Hatch Chile Pepper Festival at Central Market (this weekend and next) is to food nerds what American Idol is to, well, nerds. Every year we go and stuff carts full of specialty products made from peppers from Hatch, New Mexico (Hatch hot dog buns, Hatch pesto, etc.) and eat through the pain. This year, the event is a two-weekend spicy extravaganza, August 18-20 and 25-27.
Abigail Scruggs, who puts all of this Hatch-madness together at the North Lamar store, tells us they’ll be roasting peppers on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday both this week and next. We recommend that you go buy a bunch, eat them, freeze them, whatever. If you visit the store on the next two Saturdays or Sundays, you’ll be able to snatch up Hatch sausage wraps, Hatch hamburger patties, and fresh roasted corn to eat while you truck through the store, buying special Hatch products (we’ll never forget the Hatch Pepper and Peach fruit-freeze of three years ago which simultaneously pleased and confused our palates and gave us brainfreeze.)
