Guest ColumnIST: KUT's Laurie Gallardo Talks Texas Tunes

We've asked KUT's Laurie Gallardo, host of Before the Break and a new local music program on Friday evenings, to join our staff as a guest contributor. She'll be sharing with us the many Austin- and Texas-based bands that she's been listening to. Enjoy! -- The Editors

First and foremost, I must express my undying gratitude to all the peeps, including the Austinist, who’ve provided their support, and for promoting my new on-air gig.

And thanks to friends for tolerating the series of mini-nervous breakdowns I had before my last show. It’s great comedy, really. I should’ve charged admission.

Quite a handful of local artists were featured throughout the evening – too numerous to mention here, but…I feel compelled to throw out a few names here and there: Peel, Pocket Symphonies, Go Nova, the White Ghost Shivers, Bellaparker, Pompeii, the Unbearables, and the Lemurs, to name but a few. I opened the show with “Manipulation” by the Black Angels and “Calling Thermatico” by Centro-Matic.

I included music from the lovely Rachel Goldstar and a rough track from She, Sir, and featured a song from a yet-unreleased copy of the EP Pulling Up Floors, Pouring On (New) Paint from the Lovely Sparrows. Feel free to peruse the playlist for yourself, available from the KUT website:

This week, you can expect to hear from the Casting Couch, Brothers and Sisters, Golden Bear, Peter and the Wolf, and the Happy Families.

That’s only brushing the surface. My head’s spinning just thinking about the playlist I’m already working on, but I humbly welcome requests. Please send them to info @ kut.org. I can’t promise to get to them all, but it will be a huge help to get the ball rolling.

As RoboCop would say: “Thank you for your cooperation.”
