Screening: How To Eat Fried Worms

081106FriedWorms.jpg We remember the things our friends used to dare us to eat—dog kibble, crayons, congealed bacon grease—and that was just last month. We also remember the last time we won a bet (thank you, Italy), and the last time we felt social pressure to fit in (henna tattoos can look real if done professionally). That’s why the screen adaptation of Thomas Rockwell’s book, How To Eat Fried Worms is something we’ve been waiting for since we heard about the thousands of Austin actors who showed up for the open casting call last summer.

The story revolves around Billy, a fifth grader who commits the social faux pas of making an enemy out of the school bully on his first day. In an effort to raise his social standing, he makes a bet that he can eat a worm a day over 15 days. Rockwell’s (son of Norman Rockwell) children’s classic was written in 1973, but has been in print ever since, as the repulsion factor presented with universal themes is a favorite among kids and teachers. The story has been updated for the screen with research retrieved from the internet and microwaves used in the worm execution cooking cuisine. {The filmmakers assure us that no worms were harmed in the making of this film.)

Austin Studios hosted the production, and the Austin Film Society is offering a sneak preview before it opens in wide release on August 25th. We’ll want to see who made the cut in the local auditions last summer and cast members Andrew Gillingham and Nick Krause will be in attendance for a Q&A.
