Scrabble Champion of the World to be Determined in Austin

scrabblerocks.jpgJust because you shellacked your mom and younger brother with a well-placed “quixotic” after dinner the other night doesn’t mean you’re a true Scrabble master. (Your mom told us she’d had three glasses of white wine at cocktail hour, anyway, which means the playing field was totally not level.)

If you want to prove it for real, and clear your place beside the uber-nerds of Word Wars, all while raising money for a good cause, sign up now for Literacy Austin’s Third Annual Team Scrabble Night, due to take place September 7.

You can register as a team or a singleton—they’ll hook you up with a cohort if none of your friends are geeky enough to join you. (May we recommend that you start hanging out with grad students?) Teams can buy extra letters, "peeks" in the dictionary, or expert advice from judges—all of which renders the event a not-quite-meritocracy but definitely pumps up the Literacy Austin coffers. John Erler of the Sinus Show will emcee.

Why are we telling you about this now, you ask? The registration deadline is August 28, and apparently spaces fill up quick, so stop tilting at windmills and hop to it. We’ll remind you again closer to the date.

I actually saw a "I'd Rather Be Playing Scrabble" bumper sticker yesterday, I was so sad I didn't have my camera.

I have to say - for someone who doesn't like the game itself, I have actually sat an watched the World Series of Scrabble on ESPN and those are some seriously smart and strategic mofos.

classic Grad school clip from Simpsons. a tip of the hat, onion.

Indeed, this is one of the most cleverly linked posts in quite some time. I like the "quixotic" reference as well. Very nice!

Not to be the biggest nerd, but "Wordplay" is the New York Times Crossword Puzzle doc and "Word Wars" was the Scrabble doc. I personally prefer the Scrabble doc myself.

true, brigette. sadly, i believe onion and i just had that conversaiton last week. so, either she was being obtuse in her reference or just spaced it. thanks. and word.

my bad, i take full responsibility. ms onion is above reporach, undoubtedly

i'm always beyond and above reproach. both movies are to be seen. and that simpsons grad school clip haunts my dreams, don't think it doesn't.

BEYOND! damn it! i can't do anything right today. i am staying off the internet for the next few days. well, at least i'm not a grad student. in america.
