YouTubeAUSTIN: Joe Jamail Deposition

Joe Jamail is a household name around Austin. The football field at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium and the Texas Swimming Center both carry his name. In his most famed case, Jamail represented Pennzoil in their lawsuit against Texaco, won and was paid somewhere in excess of one billion dollars for his efforts.

Joe Jamail is known for being abrasive and straightforward; he was once quoted as saying, "I grew up fighting. I had to. I'm still fighting, in a different way. Bullies and snobs have always ignited in me the fire that smolders inside my soul. I have never been able to stand by and let someone abuse another person. I have to go in and help. And win."

In this week's edition of youTubeAUSTIN, we invite you to be a fly on the wall as Joe Jamail runs a deposition. Bordering on just plain awkward, the video quickly escalates from round-table questioning to heated debate, then right into straight-forward shouting match. "Come over here and try it, you dumb son of a bitch" is the last we hear as the video stops just short of a full-fledged, old person slapping duel. But without a conclusion, we are left to guess--and search youTube for part two. Until then, we'll bet on Jamail.

  • Just saw the Joe Jamil deposition on Meanhorn earlier today.

Guess it's in the air. The hot, nasty air.

Not only did they show us this video in Evidence class, our Civil Procedure textbook featured a transcript of this very deposition. (If you couldn't tell, I'm in law school). Jamail certainly is (in)famous.

  • That is, WITHOUT A DOUBT, the BEST deposition I have EVER seen! And, unfortunately for me, I've had to sit through a few in my day.

"Now you just shut the hell up, FAT BOY." Lawyers are so eloquent. 'Specially them good ol' boy sumbeeitch varietals.
