We Like the Nightlife, We Like to Boogie: This Week in Theatre

austinistpiccut.jpg

Another fine weekend of theatre and dance lay before ye. Ya’ll. Yous guys. Admit it, even though you might talk big about “shacking up with the sweet-ass honeeeeeyz”, what you’d really like to do is see someone perform – for once – without whippin’ out their nipples.

Well now, captain sensitive, we’ve got the ticket for you. You can live it up with the legendary Eartha Kitt or kick it downtown style with your friends at the Austin Improv Collective. Get in touch with your Latino heritage courtesy of Aztlan Dance or your Austin = genius writers heritage courtesy of Steve Tomlinson. It’s all fun to watch – and these people perform even if you don’t buy them drinks all night and talk about your “sweet ride”. Joking aside, theatre chicks are notoriously easy, so you’ll probably end up scoring anyway.

Our big Austinist Pick of the Week for strenuously suggested viewing is American Fiesta. This piece was originally commissioned by the State Theatre where it had a hugely successful run last year. Steve has been voted Austin’s best monologist, is a hugely popular local performer, and is completely, 100% worth seeing. Be there or no one will think you’re cool ever again. Originally at the State Theatre, but moved to the McCullough Theatre due to flooding, the show runs Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm. Tickets and info here.

EARTHA KITT
Austin Cabaret Theatre has somehow managed to snag one of the most legendary cabaret singers in the history of show business. Like ever. Who knows what they had to do, but you’ll have to fork over $175. That’s no typo. Not surprisingly, this classy gig is at the Mansion at Judges Hill. It’s ACT’s annual fundraiser, so please be generous. 6pm – more info at Austin Cabaret’s website.

CUENTOS: AZTLAN SHORT STORIES
Aztlan Dance brings us another narrative dance performance exploring love, life and heritage in the barrio. Vibrant and colorful Latino cultural imagery abound in this awesome new work. Check it out in the delightfully intimate Santa Cruz Center for Culture. For info and tickets, check out Aztlan’s website.

AUSTIN IMPROV COLLECTIVE
You might’ve noticed a new column on Austinist called This Week in Sketch and Improvisation. All you could ever need to know about Austin’s massive improv scene is contained therein.

Also, as always, there are plenty of shows still running from last week. For info check out last week's TWIT.

  • Oh, Mr McCormick, you're too kind.

  • Mr. Morgan, keeping it righteous, as usual.
