This week in Sketch and Improvisation: July 27th - 29th

mortals.jpgWith Out of Bounds - Austin's premier improvisation and sketch festival - quickly approaching (August 30th – September 4th, 2006), the Austinist gets you acquainted with the hometown scene through this weekly series highlighting ensembles, players and shows about town.

(Didn't know there was a difference between improv and sketch? Waste valuable work time looking it up.)

Week in Review - July 20th -22nd
This past weekend, we saw some great shows, the highlight being the fast-paced, high-energy show by the Foolish Mortals (pictured left). The Mortals have been putting on strong shows recently, and - although they can tend towards the profane or "blue" (fair warning for the prudish among us) - they build well upon one another’s ideas as an ensemble. Next show - August 25th at 8pm (Hideout).

On the Out of Bounds front, One Too was the winner of the OoB Cagematch for Week 2 and advances to face off against the Bridgeport Women’s Correctional Facility Short Form Players on August 11th. Prison ladies vs. solo improv from a Plan II intellectual will make for some excellent fun.

Out of Bounds Tip of the Week
Dasariski, a three-man, Los Angeles-based ensemble (with players that have written and played with MadTV, SNL, Second City and Improv Olympic) are truly the best improvisers we've ever seen. If you are a music nerd, these guys are like the New Pornographers of improv - all incredibly talented in their own right. Combined, it's a transcendental experience. Do not miss.
Sunday, September 3rd
7:30pm @ Esther's Pool
Playing with Available Cupholders (Austin) and 3 for All (San Francisco).

Check out a full listing of this weekend's improv and sketch after the jump.

**Recommended. These two veteran ensembles consistently make us laugh with their commitment to characters, story and occasionally un-PC situations. Get Up's Shannon McCormick (Salvage Vanguard Theatre, Gnap! Productions) and Shana Merlin know how it's done.

Friday, July 28th - 11:30PM
The Out of Bounds Cagematch - Week 3
Competing for the final coveted spot in the Out of Bounds festival, two teams present 22 minutes each of their best work to be voted on by the audience. Two teams enter - one team leaves! (Insert Howard Dean howl here)
This week: The Leading Brands vs. The Dark Bloodlords

An improvised parody of "Law and Order". Opening weekend.

Whirled News Tonight
Using articles chosen by the audience, the cast creates improvised social satire on the spot.

Shana vs. Shannon in a cage.

  • And let me clarify. Shana=a slut for improvisational acting; not a slut who happens to do improv.

  • Shana Merlin, my partner and improv slut.

  • Woohoo! I'm in every show tonight. And all of them are listed here. (I'm guesting with The Leading Brands.) I'll make sure to be extra Un-PC tonight to please our audiences.

  • Well, the dudes in Knuckleball have been known to play mentally challenged individuals now and again. But Shana and I always use our broad stereotypes of genders, ethnic types, and regional accents for good.

  • that was not specific to Get Up, but more about the groups playing that night. i wish they made a super-period to separate thoughts.

  • And hey, when have I ever been less than PC?

Looks like a great weekend line-up! And with so many shows of such variation, there might just be something for everyone.

  • Hey Erika, thanks for the shout out. And go Austin comedy!
