Crush-Out Austin: Christina de Roos
It's the Orange-Hat Bike Messenger guy, or a Lone Star Rollergirl. It's the hot YogaYoga instructor or the red-haired guy who works the counter at the Whole Foods.
It's your local secret crush.
We continue our ultimate wingmanship by tracking down our next interviewee based on two separate requests. (One, from a fellow improviser, and another after her photo was featured along with our podcast a few months back).
The "cutie with the ruffly shirt" who (according to a separate admirer) "is adorable" talks to us about her new DIY craft addiction, rock climbing and a sentimental love of all things Sufjan. This edition's featured crush shows isn't afraid of cutting the rug with strangers - Christina de Roos.
So, what do you do when you aren't pursuing your PhD in evolutionary biology at UT or doing improv?
I just started rock climbing. I love the challenge of picking a problem (the term for a specific route on the wall) and finding a way to complete it. I think it is as much a mental sport as it is a physical one. I'm also a fan of the New York Times crossword puzzle. I've been doing it off and on for a couple years now. I used to race a colleague in my lab to see who could complete the puzzle faster (though by Friday we had to work together to finish the puzzle).
What was the last book or periodical you read?
A pamphlet from rock climbing class.
Can't come up with six letter word for "intelligentsia"? Christina talks about the beauty of unexplained dance partners and her love of Cornell's Big Red Bear after the jump.
Here's the required annoying record question - 3 all time favorites and 1 recent find. Tell us why these get the nod.
I am one of those people who gets caught up in one or two songs and forgets to listen to the rest of the album, so any CD that I want to listen to all the way through gets a big thumbs up. On that list . . .
Kid A by Radiohead. A cliched choice, but I stand by it. This CD was in my car for most of my senior year of high school and yet I still find it interesting to listen to after almost 6 years.
Illinois by Sufjan Stevens. I am a huge fan of Stevens' work... I think the songs are just beautiful and I appreciate the musicianship (Stevens played more than 20 instruments on "Illinois").
What puts Illinois over the top is the whimsy in lines like, "Frederick K. Douglass was a great debater/ But Abraham Lincoln was the great emancipator."
Apologies to the Queen Mary by Wolf Parade. I cannot pick a favorite song off this CD. I keep trying to because I like it a lot, but it's just impossible. Also, this is my default soundtrack when I have to grade exams. It keeps me going when the work gets monotonous.
The Day After Tomorrow by Postscripts. I happened upon this CD at Waterloo this weekend - what a great find! They're a local band that I know nothing about. It's very chill music. I have a feeling this will be playing in my car for the next few months.
High five on keeping it local. Describe the last thing you saw that really made you think?
This weekend I went dancing as part of a (friend's) bachelorette party. While we were there this stranger started dancing with me and mirroring my moves. Then he began to subtly take the lead and I followed by doing the same thing as him. We continued this back and forth for probably 45 minutes without ever speaking. He was totally respectful and never even touched me - it was just about dancing. It was such a beautiful, ephemeral moment to have two strangers wordlessly build something together and then part ways.
Do you have any siblings?
I have two younger full sisters - a 21 year old who is a really smart electrical engineering major and a 7 year old who is funny. I also have 2 step-siblings that I don't know very well because they live in New York, but they seem really cool.
What is your hometown(s)?
Born in Houston, TX. Raised in Ithaca, NY.
Where did you live before Austin?
I moved here from Ithaca, where I'd lived since I was 4 years old.
Favorite eatery in town?
Even though I am not a huge fan of Thai food I really like Madame Mam's.
Random one: what is your favorite mascot and why?
I have to go with my college mascot: the Big Red Bear.
What is a guilty pleasure of yours?
My roommate turned me onto www.etsy.com which is a website where crafters can sell their wares. It's dangerous to start looking because you get sucked in, but it's got some really great stuff. I just ordered a custom necklace that is a picture of my grandmother (who I was named after) set under varnish.
What else would you like us to know? This is where you can say if you are single, etc.
I am single.
I took a year of Mandarin Chinese in college and I can still speak pretty well. I have forgotten entirely how to write it. It was one of my favorite classes and I still wish I had pursued it further.
Thanks, Christina.

Next up: Austinist finds creative reasons to eschew swim wear and eat more breakfast tacos by seeking out both "the girl who works weekday mornings at El Chilito on Manor" and "the hot blonde girl who works at Austin Java on Barton Springs". After getting a (very) polite decline from the "the long-haired Crown and Anchor bartender with all the ink" (sorry, bros!), we double time it in the name of summer and all things crush.
What's the frequency Austin? Tell us about your local crush, and we just might make asses out of ourselves to get the details. Email us, without belay.
Ha.
Eh, urgh.
