We're So Del Mundo: This Week in Theatre!

worldcut.jpg

In honor of the big bi-lingual show that’s opening in town this week, we thought to ourselves, hey – why not write this post in both English and Spanish? But we don’t speak Spanish, so we used an online translator.

El ir al teatro hará que las mujeres tienen sexo con usted.

And now, on with our ¡Selección de Austinist de la semana! It’s a very close call between Petra’s Cuento, the aforementioned bi-lingual show from Teatro Vivo, and St Idiot Collective’s very first production, ever, Vaudeville Vanya. Damn, it’s close. Like, a freakin’ squeaker. St Idiot’s show is full of actors we love big-style, like Lee Eddy, Brent Werzner, Jenny Larson and more (all recently seen in The Intergalactic Nemsis) – but on the other hand, Rupert Reyes is, as accurately stated by the Chronicle, the “grand jefe” of bi-lingual theatre. What’s a theatre-goer to do?

First, you can stop your damn whining. Segundo, you can see them both. Petra’s Cuento runs at the Dougherty Arts Center Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm. More info on that show here. Vanya runs at Arts on Real, also on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm. Buy your tickets for that show, aquí.

OUT OF BOUNDS FESTIVAL CAGEMATCH TOURNEY
Wow. After 5 years of working like dogs, their ship has come in. So many comedy troupes applied to be in the festival, that there's not enough slots to accommodate them all. Faced with this dilema, did festival producers A) cry; B) quit the whole thing; or C) Come up with a cagematch style tournament du elimination so that the remaining local improv troupes could duke it out -- allowing the last slot in the festival to be filled by the winner of the ultimate comedy fight to the death? You decide. The event runs every Friday night from now until August 25th, 10:30pm at the Hideout. More info at the Out of Bounds website.

AN ARABIAN MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM
This is the very first show ever performed in the new theatre space behind Ararat – one of our most favorite restaurants in all of Austin. If you’ve ever eaten at Ararat, then it’ll be no surprise that Tongue and Groove Theatre has decided to add a little belly-dancing to Shakespeare’s famous tale of some weird ass shit that goes down in a forest. Fairies, men turning into donkeys, and now, for the very first time, a genie. It all starts Friday night at 9PM. Tickets are $20. Insider tip: tickets are 2-for-1 if you have dinner at Ararat before or after the show (just make sure you have reservations). Info at Tongue and Groove’s website, Tickets at Austix.

THE PLAY ABOUT THE BABY
Edward Albee, that mountain of the modern American theatre, that genius, that sage, that…well, ya know, he’s a playwright that people like. Here’s a dark – real dark – comedy he wrote based on that other famous American play, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Presented here by Coda Theater Project – maybe with a baby, maybe not. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm at the play! Theatre.

I AM MY OWN WIFE
The true story of a transvestite presented in that time-honored theatrical tradition…the one man show. Said transvestite “successfully navigated the two most oppressive regimes of the past century”, and is being played by some guy they brought in from NYC (that’s according to Austinist's insider sources who’ve spoken to us only on condition of strict anonymity). The show won a Tony after the NYC run, and is directed here by Dave Steakley – so chances are, quality is high. Presented by Zach Scott Theatre, which means all information you could possibly need can be found right smack dab in the middle of their website.

RADIO: 30
The latest from Ken Webster and his cohorts at Hyde Park Theatre, about a radio personality who has a conscience-inspired meltdown. Don’t worry, it’s funny. (Check out their awesome E-card, here). It stars Mical Trejo of the famed Latino Comedy Project, who’s also a real live radio DJ on Jammin 105.9, just in case any of you would admit to listening to the radio. Tickets, info and more at Hyde Park Theatre’s website!

  • Oops. Yes. It's at 11:30. My bad.

  • Yeah, that's 11:30. My bad.

  • I hope ya'll draw blood. I really do.

Tonights OOB Cagematch has a lot of heat under it. The two teams have been trash talking each other all week online and I hear there are going to be some great characters on both sides. This is going to be one heck of a battle, especially with the coveted Out of Bounds slot as a prize.

Oh, and the Cagematch is actually at 11:30pm, I think there must be a typo.

The match-up in tonights Out of Bounds Cagematch should be REALLY REALLY funny. I have seen both troupes perform before and they were amazing. I am honestly shocked that they are having to fight to get into the festival. If these guys didn't makethe final cut, then I can't wait to see who did.
