AIPP Announces Lucrative Opportunity for Sculpture and Mural Artists
City of Austin's Art in Public Places (AIPP) program, which seeks to beautify outdoor spaces with installations of sculptures and murals by local and national artists, recently finished displaying the design proposals for the future north Austin development where the Mueller Airport used to sit.
This week, they've issued a new challenge to artists all over the country: the new Gables development north of Town Lake Park has been alloted a public art budget of $170,000 to install new permanent works by early 2008, at various potential areas around the lake (parkland, earth berm at the bridge terminus, vehicular roundabout, and railroad underpass). The budget is meant to encompass the entire design process, including design, fabrication, installation, structural drawings, insurance requirements and documentation).
While the contest is open to folks everywhere, we'd like to strongly encourage our local contingent of artists to apply. The qualifications indicated by AIPP, as well as their recommendations for the final art installation ("conceptual or functional, and may be responsive to the varied elements within the environment"), are intentionally abstract, which means that most anyone with a compelling vision probably ought to submit something. The deadline for turning in your RFQ (see below link) is September 1st. Up to three finalists will be chosen (and paid) to develop more concrete proposals for the sites; one of these will be ultimately selected to complete the full project.

They're also seeking applications for the Twin Oaks Branch Library Public Art Project, which is listed after the jump.
AIPP is seeking local artists or artist teams (within 100 miles of Austin) to create unique, durable artwork for the new Twin Oaks Branch Library to be built at the site of the former South Austin Post Office at 1800 South Fifth Street. Located in the heart of residential South Austin, this future library has been dubbed an “Eclectic Circus” due to its function as a gathering place for the diverse communities of people it serves. The architecture and site provide several art opportunities for the commissioned artist. An informational meeting for artists will be held on July 18th, 6:30 pm at the former Post Office (1800 S. 5th St.) The artwork budget is approximately $22,500, and the deadline to apply is August 30, 2006. Artists who live in South Austin, as well as artists new to the public art process, are encouraged to apply. Please contact Jean Graham, AIPP Coordinator, at 974-9313, with any questions.
