Rancid at Emo's, Sunday and Monday

rancid.jpgRemember when these guys were all over MTV and sold millions of records? Yeah, us neither, but don't even front like you didn't spend your whole senior year tooling around in your El Dorado, singing along to Ruby Soho and putting Kool Aid in your hair.

Way back in 1992--allegedly the "year punk broke"--cult punk revival bands from California were a dime a dozen, and they were all being offered millions by major labels to (hopefully) be the next Nirvana. The Offspring came close, Green Day apparently still play shows and stuff, and Rancid...well, Rancid actually stayed on Epitaph, their label to this day. And even with Tim Armstrong co-writing radio hits for Pink and rolling in filthy lucre, Rancid still has more street cred than Dave Grohl has money in the bank.

Rancid play back-to-back shows at Emo's this Sunday and Monday. Sunday night's show with Austin's own Black Star Brigade is, of course, sold out, but the recently-added Monday show with the Street Dogs and Complete Control is still doing business.

Yeah, all I meant by the Offspring thing was that they sold a heap of records and were somewhere on the cultural radar...not that they were, y'know, artistic or anything. And yeah, my bad on neglecting the Op Ivy roots-must've slipped my mind or something...

1994, Rancid and J Church in Deep Ellum... my first "show". Good times. Seems odd to not mention their Op Ivy roots... that'd be like leaving Minor Threat out of the Fugazu bio.

The Offspring came close to being Nirvana? Really? For some reason I don't remember it happening that way.
