A slew. A smorgasboard. A swarm. A bunch. A lot.
All right, people. After a little bit of a lull last weekend, we’re back on form here in theatre-land. Dance, drama, debate, big cheesy musical adaptations of classic MGM films – it’s all here, and it’s all waiting. For you. Always for you.
That being said, big ups to our Austinist Pick of the Week, Kathy Dunn Hamrick’s And Then There Were Twelve. Every encounter we’ve had with this company has been fantastic, and with the recent addition of eight new dancers, we're more then excited to see what KDH comes up with. Solid, professional, modern dance at its best, but it’s only running this Saturday (8pm) and Sunday (5pm). So quick, change your plans, go to the company’s website, and buy yourself a ticket. McCullough Theatre on UT Campus (previously at the State Theatre, but moved due to flooding). Click here for directions.
IN ON IT
Lowell Bartholomee directs this two-man show for the dirigo group. You may know dirigo for producing shows with a tendency toward the darker things in life, but no mas! This comedic shakedown about “love, life and car keys” is sure to be a whole new world of theatre fun. Hell, its summer, who wants to be all mopey? Besides, AusChron Arts Editor Robert Faires stars in it, so here’s your chance to go form an opinion about the guy who writes all their theatre reviews. Bonus! Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm at The Off Center. Visit the dirigo website, or call 476-7833 for tickets and info.
SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS
Freen musical theatre in the park! Zilker Theatre Productions continues an annual tradition with the stage version of this classic MGM movie. Beyond their freeness, these shows have a reputation for high-quality, family friendly entertainment. After a dip in Barton Springs this Saturday evening, you might want to wander over and check it out. Opens tomorrow night and runs through August 5th, with performances at 8PM. Beverly Sheffield Hillside Theatre in Zilker Park.
SLAPDASH SLAPS BACK!
The damn nice kids over at Loaded Gun Theory continue their own (sorta-) annual tradition with this insane festival celebrating the creation of new work at break-neck speeds! Read our interview with LGT big wigs Tim, Julie, E.D. and Travis to learn more. Saturday night only, 8pm at Arts on Real.
SHIRLEY VALENTINE
Onstage Theatre returns…to the stage…with this story about an ordinary, middle-class English housewife and her post-kids mid-life crisis. Opening tonight at the Austin Playhouse. Call 512 454-4925 for tickets and info.
THE DIONYSIUM
Just when you thought these dynamic debaters had given up, you realize that they’re on the second Tuesday of this month because they were busy watching fireworks this past Tuesday. This week they debate whether or not the NBA is “what it used to be”, and Clare Hayward reads from her novel, The Hypocrisy of Disco. Join in the fun at the Alamo Drafhouse South starting at 7:30pm. More info by calling 476.1320 or visiting the Dionysium super-site!
There's a few shows still running from last week, including The Intergalactic Nemesis which has been held over through this Saturday, A Brief History of Helen of Troy from Capital T Theatre, and The Hollow from Different Stages. Check out last week's TWIT for more info!

There is a cast party after the Sunday KDH performance and it is my understanding that show attendees are welcome to attend.
BTW, Crowns is also still running at the Zack.
Finally, does any one know why ZHT is doing Seven Brides for Seven Brothers? They announced last summer that they were doing Beauty and the Beast this summer. I do enjoy the Zilker Summer Musicals, but it's starting to feel like they are picking somewhat stale shows. A post-1965 show would be nice once in awhile. Oh well, at least we have several fresh alternatives in town.
For the kind of work they produce, I'd love to see ZHT produce something more contemporary. I'd even vote for a musical like Sunday in the Park With George (relatively lame second act notwithstanding).
Thanks for the heads up on the KDH party and Crowns at Zach Scott!!
