Danielson (formerly the Danielson Famile) is an indie pop/Christian gospel troupe band of brothers and sisters from suburban New Jersey. Formed as a result of elder Smith and frontman Daniel's senior thesis at Rutgers, entitled A Prayer for Every Hour, the band released a steady stream of albums starting the late 90s. Back in 2001 they signed to Secretly Canadian -- home to beloved indie acts like Antony and the Johnsons, Jens Lekman, Damien Jurado, and Magnolia Electric Co -- on which they've recently come out with the amazing Ships.
The are three sides to music making, as far as the Smith clan is concerned: "Famile," "Brother," and, uhh, "Ship." The first, celebrating family, was realized with Danielson's Fetch the Compass Kids (2001). Following this was Brother Is To Son, issued under the band name Brother Danielson; it sought to recognize "personal identity and community." Ships, meant as some sort of resolution to complete the trifecta, brings together roughly twenty musicians (including Sufjan Stevens, Lekman's drummer, Deerhoof, Why? and more) in an all-out epic production. All Music Guide hails the album as "striking the perfect balance between dissonance and melody," while the self-professed heathens at Tiny Mix Tapes call it a "brilliant collaboration of the finest indie minds backed by only the best intentions."
