Independence Day TV

Just in case you get stuck inside this evening because of the rain, here are some possible TV viewing options:

  • PBS' A Capitol Fourth is usually a decent program. Except this year it will be hosted by Jason Alexander and will feature a duet between Vanessa Williams and Elmo. More concert details. (KLRU, 7pm)
  • A Hero's Welcome seems to lean towards the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition vein of hokey tributes to deserving people. Patrick Duffy (from Dallas, duh) will host this show honoring two men who put their lives on the line to save others. (KEYE, 7pm)
  • Chevy's Freedom Over Texas will show the Houston fireworks and celebrations. (KEYE, 8pm)
  • Turner Classic Movies will start playing patriotic films at 7pm, starting with Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, followed by our favorite James Cagney musical, Yankee Doodle Dandy at 9:15pm. For all the Reagan fans, Knute Rockne, All American shows at . . . 2am.
  • Comedy Central commemorates our nation's independence by showing the great class/race comedy, Trading Places, starting at 6:30pm. Dan Akroyd when he was cute-ish, Eddie Murphy in his pre-Mulan days, and Jamie Lee Curtis in her BAFTA-winning role, plus Don Ameche and Ralph Bellamy as evil corporate chiefs of industry.

Hopefully it won't rain (although right now it looks to be a 60% chance that it will). Whatever the weather, have a safe and happy Fourth!
