They Paved Paradise and Put Up a Parking Lot (Redux)

We told you a few months ago about the fight over the sale of Roy’s Taxi to Yellow Cab. From that post in March:

Taxi cab drivers and riders spoke and the city listened. Roy's Taxi has been hoping to sell its family business that has been around for over 70 years to Yellow Cab of Houston for several months, but last night the Urban Transportation Commission put an end to that hope. The UTC voted unanimously to block the sell of Roy's to Yellow, fearing that the sell, which would give Yellow Cab 77% of the taxi business in Austin, would create a monopoly.

Drivers for Roy's took exception to the fact that Yellow Cab charges their drivers $50 more a week in terminal fees, while residents expressed concerned over Yellow Cab's lack of prioritization of rides for disabled citizens along with a seeming lack of attention and respect given to passengers requiring rides from certain areas in Austin, specifically East Austin. The Velasquez family, which has owned Roy's since 1931, wants to retire from the business and now fear they are left with no viable alternative. While we feel for the Velasquez family's inability to sell to the highest bidder, we side with the cabbies on this one. Monopolies equal bad news.

Well, Roy’s got their way, as did Yellow Cab. The Austin Business Journal has reported that the sell, which was approved last month by the Austin City Council, will effectively merge the two cab companies into one beginning in August.

"We look forward to combining the rich history of Roy's Taxi with the state of the art technology offered by Yellow Cab," says Bobby Velasquez, one of five brothers who operate Roy's Taxi. "Riders all over Greater Austin will have access to one of the best taxi fleets in the nation."

  • Back when I was on the UTC and people asked what we did, I'd usually say something like "make fairly informed recommendations on transportation and then have the City Council completely ignore them. Oh, but we usually get our way in the exciting world of taxicab licenses".

    Hooray for progress.

Let's hope the new "Rellow's Taxi" drivers can drive better than you guys spill, or this sell could end up causing a lot of blood spellage.

  • Chris, exposed

Wow, I can't believe I misspelled "spilling," what a mo-ron I am. I didn't even catch it after my traditional proofreading, which I do during the long wait after clicking Submit!

In my defense, I had just gotten up from a nap...

The yellow cabs are state of the art? That's scary. Both Roys and Yellow cabs feel like the wheels are going to come off when going above about 15mph. I've been in more state of the art taxis in Tijuana.

  • odam

i can't tell if you've got my back or his, chris. either way, shouldn't you be out boozing or some such? and i assume you meant, "spilling." see what happens when people start nitpicking about spelling on the inranet? this is what happens when you start nitpicking strangers on the internet.

  • don't you mean "sale?"

Or is your legal-beagle career spelling into the hipster news writing hobby?

  • odam

that's it! we're firing our intern. right after she gets back from getting us gelato.

  • Tarvin

    It's a sale, not a sell.

    Sell is the verb.
