Political Tidbits and Other Scraps

- Local: It seems that Delay's 2003 gerrymandering has left Texans confused about what district they reside in. One Austin couple appear to be in two Congressional Districts at the same time. In other redistricting news: The U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas has ordered that all proposed solutions for fixing the state's congressional districts are due to the court on July 14th.
- State: Republican Gov. Rick Perry delivered a speech to the Texas Classroom Teachers Association on Thursday. He touted his $2,000 across-the-board raise for public school teachers, but stated that budgetary uncertainties make it impossible for him to commit to additional salary increases.
- National: President Bush stated that he will abide by the U.S. Supreme Court ruling which found his administration’s use of military commissions to try prisoners at Guantánamo Bay to be illegal. Democrats state that the ruling shows that the president's power is not unlimited.
- World: Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has stated that Hamas militants have agreed to a conditional release of the kidnapped Israeli soldier, but Israel has yet to respond to the proposal. Israel claims that no such offer has been made. Isn't this crazy?
- Other: A Bishop Lynch High School student was busted for delivering marijuana-laced muffins to a group of teachers last month. In other other news: More human heads have been found in Mexico.
