Independence Brewery's Independence Day Celebration

independwheat.jpgSouth Austin beermeisters Rob and Amy Cartwright of Independence Brewing Company are kicking off a campaign this summer to help out the Barton Springs Greenbelt. Through the Freestyle Summer Fund, they'll donate a buck from every case of Freestyle Wheat Beer sold until mid September to the Austin Parks Foundation, to help out with various greenbelt preservation projects. To launch this effort, they're inviting you out to their Independence Day Celebration on Saturday, where you'll be able to get a glimpse of their fortress of fermentation and probably get a mild buzz going, one mini-beer sample at a time. Afterwards, everyone will head over to Barton Springs Pool for their 2nd Annual Freestyle Jump Competition, where contestants will compete for glory (and booze, we're guessing) by diving into the springs in a manner that's either creative, enthusiastic, or best resembles the Tarzan-like figure on the Freestyle Wheat Beer label.

Last time I was at one of their free events, there was the option of buying a pint glass at the facility, which could be used with the free beer tickets. So instead of 3 free mini-beers, I got 3 free pints. Definitely the way to go.

It's not the easiest place to find. You have to turn left into the third entrance of Pecan Business Park (3913 Todd Lane), then drive past the first group of buildings to the parking lot behind it. Independence is on the right, near the back.
