We know a good movie title when we read one. Just knowing that I Am A Sex Addict is meant in the driest, deadliest-of-deadpan, classic-Woody-Allen humor in every respect makes the draw that much more irresistible. Almost an. . .addiction, we might say.
In a wonderfully original approach to autobiography, Caveh Zahedi's film weaves documentary, re-enactment narrative, behind-the-scenes glimpses and animation to create an unflinching look at his penchant for sex with prostitutes and his lust for telling the truth.
We meet Zahedi on his third-time’s-the-charm wedding day before embarking on a dramatized chronicle of his doomed attempt at monogamy, spanning the globe from Paris to Austin…yes, that Austin. Described as “perversely interesting,” by Roger Ebert, this IFC Films' production takes a flying leap into dysfunctional scenarios projected in a humorous and self-effacing light while immersed in religious iconography and opportunities for wickedly immoral laughter.
A rotoscoped Zahedi appeared in Richard Linklater’s Waking Life as the theater patron who eschewed the essence of Godard and cinema.
I am a Sex Addict opens today at the Dobie.
*Director Zahedi will be in attendance at tonight and Saturday's 7:30pm screenings.*
