State Theatre Update

The historic State Theatre on Congress Avenue, which flooded two weeks ago when a water main ruptured overnight and left the backstage and front rows of seating underwater, has considerably more damage than what was initially anticipated, according to KXAN:

"The stage is gone right now," said Ken Stein, Executive Director with the Paramount and State Theatres. "We found water under the stage. They had to take it apart. Twenty-five percent of the seats are going to have to be taken out of the theatre. Everything in the production facility is going to have to be lifted up, taken out and stored off-site so they can dry out the space."

With repairs underway and the performance of "Bunkbed Brothers" finished, the Summer Film Series at the Paramount Theatre next door will resume its regular schedule starting this week. The Indiana Jones 25th Anniversary screenings have been moved to early September.

Similary...see below. In short, if there was something on slate at the State that you wanted to see, assume a venue change before a cancellation. I think folks are doing everything possible to avoid cancellations.

Due to the flooding of The State Theatre Puerto Rican Folklorico Dance’s Celebrando 2006 - "Son Boricua" has been moved to UT’s McCullough Theatre.

Puerto Rican Folkloric Dance celebrates the rich culture of Puerto Rico with a unique performance. Dancers and musicians bring to life Puerto Rico's past with the rich "Musica de los 40s," a musical style Rafael Hernandez and Bobby Capo made famous!

  • Other shows slated for the State are moving to other venues as well. The Kathy Dunn Hamrick Dance Company, a great local modern dance company, is moving its July 9 & 10 show from the State to the McCullough Theatre at the University of Texas.
