Soccer Madness in Germany
*This post comes from Austinist Special World Cup Correspondent Ben Gardner, Co-Host of KOOP’s SoccerMad, who is in Germany for this year’s Cup.*
One week gone and all the teams have taken the pitch. The Americans are awful and Ecuador is one of the few surprises thus far. I just returned from the streets of Munich, where the party is on. Oliver Neuville´s last minute goal to beat Poland has, in all likelihood, sent the Germans to the next round and has their fans going berserk. The Giselsstrasse is flooded with people burning flares and singing the praise of their heroes. It´s awesome!
Trinidad & Tobago have captured the hearts of many fans out here with there 0-0 draw against Sweden, or perhaps it was there sexy women and sweet dancing. To our surprise, the Mexicans have shown up in huge numbers. They are in great spirits after their win over Iran.
The U.S. team came out without fire and without the necessary skill to deal with a powerful Czech team. We fear that the same result awaits us against Italy. Tomorrow we head to Nuremburg to be on the scene when England takes on Trinidad & Tobago. Rumor has it that 100,000 English blokes will be on hand. Pray for us.
