Let's be honest: we have no idea what to expect from Rick Linklater's newest project A Scanner Darkly. While the source material by Philip K. Dick has a strong cult following, we traditionally don't love science fiction. And while we enjoyed the Rotoscoping technique Linklater used on Waking Life, it may be strange to use it on a less arty, more linear film. It is also amazing that no reports of troubled behavior emerged from a set that included perennial troublemakers Robert Downey Jr., Winona Ryder, and Woody Harrelson. Was Linklater trying to make his life more difficult?
All that said, we are looking forward to giving the Austin-lensed Scanner a try, and now the Austin Film Society will give us an early chance to do so. The AFS will hold the Austin premiere of A Scanner Darkly on June 28th at The Paramount. Rick Linklater and other principals will be at the screening for a Q&A, composer Graham Reynolds will play a piece from the film's score, and all event proceeds benefit the film society. Ready to attend now?
Tickets for the event hit the street tomorrow at noon, and you can grab them at the Paramount Box Office or online for $12 ($8 for AFS members) right here. $30 VIP tickets will also be sold through the AFS - they include best seats in the house, and a drinks reception after the film.
