Juneteenth Celebrations This Weekend

June 19th is known as Juneteenth in Texas, and commemorates the day when the Emancipation Proclamation was read in our state. There are usually quite a few festivities to choose from when Juneteenth comes around, and this year is no different.

Friday:
The Third Annual Alvin Patterson Battle of the Bands and Drumline Competition. The fun begins on Friday at 7pm at Nelson Field, 7400 Berkman Dr. [map] Reverberations will be felt throughout the neighborhood as such bands as the Jackson All-Star Band from Jackson, MS, the Memphis All-Star Band, and the Houston All-Star Band vie against each other musically. The competition costs $15/adult and $10/kids 5-18 yrs old. If you can't catch the bands in the evening, you might check them out at the Hazel Faulke-Obey Pre-Juneteenth Congress Avenue Parade, Friday afternoon @ 2pm.

Saturday:
The day starts off with the Juneteenth 2K Freedom Run/Walk, 9:30am at MLK Blvd. and Comal. Late registration is being taken through Thursday [PDF entry form].

The parade begins at 10am at the same location, ending up at Rosewood Park, 2300 Rosewood Ave [map]. The free festival starts there after the parade.

Monday, June 19th:
10am @ Rosewood Park there will be an intergenerational program to celebrate the day.
