Crush Out Austin: The Hideout Coffee Guy

thehideout_color.jpgIt's the girl in the cutoffs who works mornings at El Chilito or the long-haired Crown n' Anchor bartender with all the ink. It's the Saturday Hatha instructor at YogaYoga South. Or the red-haired guy who works the counter at the Whole Foods.

It's your local secret crush.

We kick off our recurring interview series by getting the down-low on the Hideout coffee shop guy. Unfazed by the knowledge that he is the object of a crush, we ask for some personal details, and he (begrudgingly) obliges.

So. What do you do when you aren't working at the coffee shop?

I drink. Watch cartoons. Or something else occasionally. Mostly, it's the first two.

What was the last book or periodical you read?

I read Cabinet religiously. It's a periodical that comes out four times a year. The most recent one is about electricity. Also, I've really been into j.d. salinger lately.

What was the last thing you saw that really made you think?

Strung out drunk hobo on the number one bus, headed north bound.... that could be me in 20 years.

*Intrigued, mon cherie? Read more after the jump.*

Do you have any siblings?

One brother (three years older) one stepbrother (4 years older) and one stepsister (5 months older)

Where is your hometown?

VIDOR, TX. Deal with it.

Do you have a favorite eatery?

Gene's Po'boys, or maybe...some buffet of some kind.

So. Here is the required annoying record/album question, tell us your three all-time favorites and a recent find.

Three favorites: Tom Waits (any album), The Books (any album) and The Decemberists (that first album). Recent find? Skeletons and the Girl Faced Boys are pretty good.

What else would you like us to know?

I'm nothing special, plenty of jerks work in coffeeshops. Don't be fooled by our jaded charm. We didn't go to college...look at us now. "Small, medium, or large?"

Thanks for being our first featured person in the column.

I only did this to make my father proud.

Austin, the rest is up to you. More of this self-effacing wit can be found at the Hideout Coffeeshop. We recommend you bone up on your command of art journals and Adult Swim before you bust a move.

Up next:
Austinist tracks down the "adorable Maggie Gyllenhaal-looking ice cream scooper at Amy's on 6th street " to get the, uh, scoop.

Is there someone you'd like us to interview? Write austinist and we'll brave the inevitably awkward approach to chat them up for you.

We got your back (high five).

Great idea for a column, though I'm probably too old for most of your subjects. It's cool to read about average working Joes/Janes in this overeducated town. XL used to do a similar thing a few years back.

BTW coffeedude, I wasn't strung out that day on the #1. You just caught me right after slamming my fourth Steel Reserve.

i wasnt the surly one, just to set the record straight.

by the way, well done erika on your column ..im still blushing.

    thanks for the feedback y'all.

every crush interviewee has an opportunity to say if they are single. however, it's up to them on whether they are willing to spill it.

photos will also be posted when the interviewee is down with it.

franks again, and keep the feedback coming!

  • Pictures would be cool. Although, let's be fair. There is that ONE surly coffee dude in particular that's probably the focus of this interview. I remember that guy from my first day in town. I stopped in because the Hideout looked cool and I needed a job. "Are you hiring?" I asked. "Does it look like it?" He responded.

Awesome idea for a column, but you forgot the most important question- are they actually single?

Also, pictures would help. There's probably more than one coffeeshop dude at the Hideout.
