"Well, I ain't a-gonna grieve no more, no more" - Not All of Austin's Changes Have Been for the Worse

Statesman jack of all trades Michael Corcoran has probably been here longer than most of you, and many of us. The writer moved to Austin in 1984, and over the years has seen the city change drastically. Sure, we can all sit around and talk about how much better Austin used to be, as Corcoran admits in one of his latest blog posts, but being overly-nostalgic about the past and overly-critical about the present can become a little tiresome, even for the most elite of folks. So Corcoran decided to look at what makes Austin better today than it was 20 years ago. Check out a couple of his examples below and check out his full list here.

For those of you who've been here long enough to know, what do you think is actually better about Austin today than 20 years ago? Let us know in the comments.

  • Capitol Metro buses didn’t seem to follow any set route 20 years ago and they rarely had to use their headlights. It seemed as if the drivers would set out each morning aimlessly exploring neighborhoods and picking up people. Then they’d all be home in time for supper. I remember once having to walk all the way from downtown to Ben White and South First because I missed the last bus south across Town Lake. At 7:45 p.m.
  • There wasn’t SXSW in 1986. It would come the next year.

  • Spook

    I don't care what anybody says -- Corky's still a newcomer.

  • Butter Woman

The food is much better. My family moved here in 1966, when Matt's El Rancho, El Patio, and Jaime's Spanish Village were the only Mexican restaurants in town.

  • I haven't been here long enough to know, but my husband has and he says the groovy new film stuff happening here is at least as good as the groovy music stuff that was here before (although the groovy music stuff still seems good to me, being a newcomer and all).
