Former Lion of the Senate Dies

bentsen.jpgOne of the greatest statesmen in Texas political history died today. Former Senator Lloyd Bentsen served the state of Texas for six years in the U.S. House and 22 years in the U.S. Senate. He also served for two years as Secretary of the Treasury after being part of the losing Democratic presidential ticket with Michael Dukakis in 1988.

The Atticus Finch-like figure, who never seemed to ruffle feathers or disrespect his peers with grandstanding, may be best remembered by the general public for his stern rebuke of vice presidential candidate Dan Quayle in a 1988 debate, when he told the junior statesman from Indiana, "I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy; Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy."

Listen to Sen. Bentsen give Quayle the business.

Bentsen leaves a leagcy to which all politicians should aspire.

i had the good fortune of spending a bit of time in sen bentsen's presence as a kid/adolescent, and he was one of the very, very few politicians who ever made me want to become one myself. of course, i didn't, but still.
