When The Streets' third album, The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living, came out last month, Austinist sponsored a listening party with the We Explode! kids at Beauty Bar. By now, most of you've probably had a chance to check out the new record by the feisty UK rapper; The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living (VICE) follows up the adorably adroit Mike Skinner's hugely successful first two albums, Original Pirate Material and A Grand Don't Come for Free, both which shocked us with their disarmingly honest glimpses into the life of a gritty, "street-level" Londoner. No longer relegated to the third-class carriage, Skinner dwells upon the trappings of celebrity in his latest release -- "How the hell am I supposed to be able to do a line in front of complete strangers/When I know they've all got camera[phone]s?,"
Quoth Skinner in an interview with Rolling Stone online:
I don't think we really like the idea of success in England so much. We're not as kind of happy with it as I think maybe the Americans are, so there's a guilt that comes with success," he says. "But then I just think, 'Well, I've worked really hard. So sod it.'"
