Openings Around Town This Weekend

  • 705624138_m.jpgAfter spending the last few months installing the enormous 40-foot wall mural and finishing the rest of the swanky Mozersky-designed interior, South Austin rock 'n roll haircutters Birds Barbershop has its soft opening this weekend. In a remarkable PR coup earlier this week, the store was the subject of a Newsweek web exclusive about a national resurgence of barbershops:
How else do you explain trying to resurrect a fossil like the American barbershop in one of the country's edgiest towns? Here's why: Against all odds, the trend is starting to reverse itself. The explanations vary about why-salon cuts are getting too expensive, men are itching to be around more men, the backlash against that risible notion of "metrosexuality" is arriving right on schedule-but the statistics are clear. The number of barbers is back up to a healthy 220,000, and it's growing. Perhaps the biggest reason for the rebound, though, is that the classic barbershop is finally evolving to meet the times.

Rumor has it that they'll be cutting a certain lovable mayor's hair next week for the official opening, with DJs and booze in tow. (Birds Barbershop, 2110 S. Lamar)

  • They've been around for a little over a week and haven't done much advertising, but the new Barton Springs Saloon looks like it's been packed every single night. And no wonder: the bar is housed in the renovated shell of that old gas station next door to P. Terry's, right on the corner of Barton Springs and South Lamar, which basically makes it the perfect neighborhood watering hole for many South Austin residents. We decided to finally check it out last night, and discovered that, while the margaritas were weak and the plastic lawn furniture reminiscent of being at a bloated tailgate party, the place certainly has potential. Assuming, of course, that they can find more parking space. (Barton Springs Saloon, Corner of Barton Springs and S. Lamar)

  • The Parlor's expansion into Hyde Park is officially complete as of this week. We haven't been to the the pizza joint's second shop yet, so we're not sure if they're also planning to book live acts, but they're at least offering a full bar. (The Parlor Hyde Park, 4301 Guadalupe)
