This Sunday evening, Austin joins the rest of the world for the 23rd International AIDS Candlelight Memorial Service, the world's largest and oldest annual grassroots HIV/AIDS event designed to honor the memory of those lost, show support for those those living with HIV/AIDS, and encourage community involvement in the fight against the disease.
Now participating for the seventh year, Austin's memorial service will start with Mayor Will Wynn lighting the first candle and reading a proclamation from the City of Austin. The Capital City Men’s Chorus (CCMC), The Daniel Link Band, and The Michael Clay Band will perform, following additional speeches and "prayer, poems, remembrances, statistics, community literature, and declarations."
"I am very proud that we are able to bring all aspects of our community together to help spread the word on this disease and gain more awareness within our own backyard," says Eric A. Crabtree, Austin AIDS Candlelight Memorial Service Coordinator. "We have lost many loved ones since and we all pray we do not lose more lives any quicker than God wants us."
