We’ll just come right out and say it: it’s a slow week in Austin performance. Our normally buoyant theatre and dance communities seem to be taking a break, gearing up for what looks to be an amazing summer. Before the UT kids come traipsing back into town in August, we’ll have seen productions from Rude Mechs’ Second Stage, Salvage Vanguard, Yellow Tape Construction Co, Dirigo Group, Rubber Repertory, Hyde Park Theatre, Zach Scott Theatre, The Getalong Gang…and that’s just off the top of our heads.
Maybe no one wanted to compete with the opening of the DaVinci Code, although rumor has it that it blows. Fortunately for you, live performance enthusiast, there are two cool new shows opening this weekend, and a bitchin’ party tonight from Sally Jaques and Blue Lapis Light (which we posted about earlier).
Austinist pick of the week:
Anna Deavere Smith. Remember how much you loved House Arrest at Zach Scott? That's the same Anna. This time she’s gone and conducted a bunch of interviews on “Health and Well-being”, presenting them here as monologue-in-progress. Take this chance to get the skinny on what will undoubtedly be a major hit at some future date.
Second up, The 24th Day. We haven’t seen anything from Naughty Austin in awhile, but we hear this is a major shift from their regular M.O. It’s about a straight man, who, after years of marriage, discovers that his one-time-only sexual encounter with another man has left him HIV positive. Just when you’re thinking that this show was funded by the Catholic Church, think again. The straight guy hunts down and kidnaps the gay guy, takes his blood sample, and threatens to kill him if it comes out positive. And you thought Sordid Lives was full of drama!
Check out all the shows still running from last week after the jump!

If anyone wants to be in the aforementioned Rubber Rep show, we're still on a mad search for petite, non-claustrophobic performers. Details below...
**********************************************************
*Do you like to hide?
*Do you like to sweat?
*Do you enjoy:
----endurance tests?
----physical challenges?
----sensory deprivation?
*Do you like the idea of being a cog in a great machine?
*Are you petite?
*Do you have fantasies of returning to the womb?
*Are you sick and tired of "acting"?
If you answered "YES!" to most of these questions,
the Rubber Repertory wants YOU for their next production.
RED CANS, a co-production with Rude Mechs,
will be performed at the Off Center August 3rd-19th.
Not really a play, and not quite a dance, RED CANS is
perhaps best described as an experiment in limitations.
What are the possibilities of a show in which all of the
performers are trapped inside small red containers?
Unable to see. Unable to speak.
Barely able to move. What's left?
Auditions will be held on Monday, May 22nd from
7-9pm at the Dougherty Arts Center.
Nothing to prepare.
Rehearsals begin in mid-June.
Call 512-470-1735 or email rubberrep@gmail.com
to schedule an audition.

*Sigh* I fail the "Are you petite" test, by quite a lot...
I'm pretty sure I couldn't fit into one those little red cans I kept seeing pictures of on ya'lls blog...
Have you cast anyone so far?
J: We've cast about seven people so far, but we'd like to double that. Any interesting folks that you weren't able to use from that dance audition a few weeks ago?
T: It would be fun to watch you try!
Josh -- there was a couple people that might work. One in particular that was a decent mover, but was primarily an actress. Did a lot of Suzuki/Viewpoints stuff before she moved to town a couple months ago. I'll pull her contact info when I get home tonight...help me remember! Email, email!
