While, for some, the Texas heat of these coming months provides the ideal excuse to stay indoors or plant oneself next to the nearest swimming pool, for other, more masochistic (and fitter, we suppose) types, it's as good of a reason as any to get out and run.

Which is why an organized weekly race like the Sunstroke Summer Stampede exists. Now entering its third year, the chip-timed 5k series takes place at 7pm, just as the sun begins its descent, and alternates between Brushy Creek (off Parmer Lane in North Austin) and Town Lake's Festival Beach (near I-35 and the Holiday Inn). Dogs and strollers are welcome, but Austinist doesn't recommend you subject your loved ones (and children) to such miserable conditions.

Individual races are $10 apiece, or you can sign up for the whole dozen for $100. The Sunstroke Summer Stampede 2006 runs through August 2nd.
