Lots of random music news today. Let's get to it before ACL Fest's lineup gets announced on Thursday and we forget about this stuff:
- Prefuse 73 has cancelled his Austin appearance later this month due to a serious illness. A note on Prefuse's Myspace page makes it sound as though the health issues are pretty severe. Pitchfork reports that the shows may be rescheduled later this year.
- Bloc Party has announced a string of US shows around their appearance at Lollapalooza. Nicely enough, this run includes a stop at Stubb's on August 10th with Mew supporting. Tickets should go on sale in the next 2 weeks or so.
- Is Sabbath the new Radiohead? Wolfmother, the Australian band that's heavily influenced by both Ozzy and Led Zeppelin, has debuted at #22 on the Billboard Top 200 album chart. It looks as though a Killers/White Stripes mass appeal thing is already happening for them, which is amazing considering they were playing an half-empty SXSW showcase in 2005. Then again, so were Arctic Monkeys.
- Finally, we can't help but mention this Saturday's KOOP 'Prom Party'. Members of Austin's Voxtrot have graciously agreed to turn up as a cover band for the event, which takes place at Red's Scoot Inn. Admission is $8 or $6 if you wear one of those 'incredible' Napoleon Dynamite-style tuxes. Expect lots of 80's and 90's hits - we feel lots of Cure and New Order coming on.
