This Week in Theatre: Mother's Day Edition

For this, the official Mother's Day edition of This Week in Theatre, we offer you a poem. Hopefully Hallmark is reading. Match each letter with its corresponding description after the jump to win a large bouquet of flowers and a handmade card. (Not really, but you will be able to decipher our Austinist pick of the week!)
Mom.
You didn’t judge me when I performed one man shows about body image and my burgeoning homosexuality, even when it made me a social outcast (A)
Oh, mother.
It’s didn’t bother you that I was the only boy in dance class. Who cares what the other moms said, now I’m fuckin’ Romeo (B)
Mommy mom mom.
You were there to support me when I joined those weird circus people, touring the country like a damned gypsy, performing magic, comedy and acrobats to the delight of children of all ages (C)
Madre.
When other kids were studying, you let me explore my science book through modern dance (D)
Life-giver.
You let me become a famous playwright, even though I was smart enough to be rich (E)
Before we move on, let’s take a second to say “thanks Mom”. We know our constant sarcasm and faux disregard for your feelings may be, at times, difficult to tolerate. But you should know, that even though you live all the way in Ohio, we’ll still be thinking of you this Mother’s Day, and we love you. And now, back to the smart-ass commentary theatre listings.
SHARIR + BUSTAMANTE DANCEWORKS SEASON FINALE – Austinist pick of the week! (D)
These guys are some heavy hitters on the Austin dance scene, and we’re sure this Season Finale will live up to their well-earned reputation. We saw some of this work at a “works in progress” showing early this year, and it showed some serious potential. You’ll see work by S+BD Artistic Director Jose Luis Bustamante (score!) plus work from special guests Theresa Hardy, Toshiko Namioka and Ray Schwartz (who seems to pop up just about everywhere these days). Tonight and tomorrow only, 8pm, at the McCullough Theatre. Call 477-6060 or visit UT PAC online for tickets and info.
THE MISFIT (A)
Alex Garza and Starlex Theatre bring you a show about homosexuality, religion, body image, dating, Olivia Newton John…etc. Oh, the life of a social outcast. Join this exploration at The VORTEX. Call 478-LAVA, or join visit with those Vortexians online style for tickets and info galore.
GOLDEN DRAGON ACROBATS (C)
One question: is there anything the Golden Dragon Acrobats won’t do to entertain you and your adoring family? We think not. Juggling, dance, comedy, magic, costumes, and – we imagine – a little showing off. That’s worth $28-49, right? Tonight and tomorrow only, 8pm at the Paramount Theatre. Call 472-5470 or visit the Paramount online for tickets and more info.
SUZAN-LORI PARKS: DRAMA AND LITERATURE LECTURE (E)
Anyone remember a little play called Topdog/Underdog? Yeah. That Suzan-Lori Parks. This Pullizter-prize winning playwright and giant of the modern theatre is coming to Austin to give us her thoughts on drama and literature. Rumor has it Parks is a damn fine speaker to boot. This will be awesome. Monday only, 7:30pm at the Paramount Theatre. Call 472-5470 or visit the Paramount online for more info. Be sure to check out our interview with Ms. Parks on Monday!
BALLET AUSTIN: ROMEO & JULIET (B)
No, not the play – the ballet. No, not Baz Luhrmann, Stephen Mills. Set to music by Sergei Prokofiev which will be performed live by the Austin Symphony Orchestra. Ballet Austin hasn’t garnished a national reputation for nothing, so we recommend taking this change to check them out. This weekend only, Friday and Saturday at 8pm, Sunday at 2pm, Bass Concert Hall. Get yer tickets here. Get yer info here.
And, while the offerings are slightly less plentiful then usual out there in our Austin theatres, there are still few shows still running from last week.
