Yet another trip to Taverna has us convinced that Robert Montez is a front-of-the-house genius. Chef Andrea Volpi treated us to a deliriously intoxicating risotto made from mushrooms sent to him by his mother, Giovanna, who lives in Milan. As in Milan, Italy, y'all. Seriously, we’re not worthy.
Bust down the doors at Central Market and hoard as much double-sweet corn from Florida as you can. It’s so sweet, we wanted to tell you it’s sweeeeet, but decided that’s just a little too silly. Kurtis Colonna in the produce department tells us it’s all about the Kentucky Wonder Beans and the Pureheart Watermelons this summer. Two years ago, Oprah told America how much she loved the Pureheart, and its popularity hasn’t waned.
Elections are Saturday, May 13 and we wanted to know what the people in Mayor Will Wynn’s office are eating these days. We’ve known our mayor was cooler than your mayor since we saw Coldplay’s Chris Martin run up the bleachers mid-performance at an Austin City Limits taping and hug him. No matter your politics, it’s hard to argue his support of the arts – visual, performing, and (duh) culinary. "I love taking my kids to their favorite place to grab a quick bite - Thundercloud. I'm easy, a turkey on wheat, which is the same sandwich my good friend Marc Katz named after me. The girls are always excited to try something new,” said Mayor and cool dad Wynn.
Meanwhile, highly likeable mayoral aide Matt Curtis tells us he’s had a love affair with The Roaring Fork for a while now. We’ve even heard rumors that his regularity there has caused some people to start calling it the Roaring Matt. We also want restaurants to be loosely named after us. Suggestions are welcome.
“I’m easily swayed to go to Austin's biggest secret - Gene's New Orleans Style on East 11th,” Curtis said. “Gene is the Gary Cooper of food. A strong, silent, reliable hero of gumbo, po' boys and etouffee.” Well said, Mr. Curtis.
At last report, the rest of the mayor’s office is evenly divided between La Michoacana, Hoffbrau and Kerbey Lane. Such good Austinites! By the way, we won’t say which candidate for whom you should vote – just vote!
