Wimberley Gets a Wine Bar: Clifford's Original Opens This Weekend

Starting this Friday, Austinist has yet another perfect excuse for getting out of the city for a day and enjoying the nearby hill country: Clifford's Original Wine Bar is opening its doors.

Built in a clearing on the rolling hills of Wimberley, just minutes from Wimberley Square (roughly 40 minutes from Travis Heights), Clifford's Original stocks a fabulous selection of wines both domestic and international, with a well-represented assortment of reds and whites, and several rosé, sparkling and dessert wines for the softer palates. Their current instantiation (April) of the oft-rotating list includes:

Reds: Becker Vineyards Claret (Texas), Cotes-du-Rhone-Villages Perrin et Fils (France), Alexander Valley Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon (California), d'Arenberg Shiraz Footbolt McLaren Vale (Australia)

Whites: Forster Stift Rieslaner Auslese Reichsrat von Buhl (Germany), Tiefenbrunner Pinot Grigio delle Venezie (Italy), Huia Sauvignon Blanc Marlborough (New Zealand)

Rose: Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Rose (South Africa)

Sparkling: Gruet Brut Blanc de Noirs (New Mexico)

Dessert: Texas Hills Vineyard Orange Moscato (Texas)

The Original was founded by Eastside Austinite Lisa Machac, formerly of the Texas Hills Vineyard, and Rodney "Clifford" and Kathy Jones, both well-seasoned wine connoisseurs in their own right. Sunday evenings are designed as "Inventory Night," when customers can come and help them finish off the various wines they've sampled over the weekend, and on "Philanthropy Night" -- the last Thursday of every month -- they donate ten percent of the evening's profits to a local charity. Several special events are also slated for the months ahead.

This weekend, Clifford's Original Wine Bar opens its doors for the first time ever! And remember, dear readers, that Mother's Day is just around the corner.
