Exploiting the masses: This Week's New Movie Releases!

Toby Keith would watch at least one of these movies...
*Akeelah and the Bee
It’s hard to make fun of such an earnest, lesson-filled film that stars Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, and an adorable little girl. All we can really say is, she best win that motherf*cking bee.
United 93
Nothing says “America” quite like capitalizing on the lingering sentiments created by recent national tragedies.
*Stick It
From the geniuses/idiots who created Bring it On, only this time with gymnasts instead of cheerleaders. So if you’re into that sort of thing (which, um, we are), then this movie’s for you. If Stick It can give us at least one decent joke on par with “Spirit fingers,” it’ll be worth it.
RV
Remember when Eddie Murphy was like, huge, and the funniest guy ever, and everybody loved him, and then he made The Adventures of Pluto Nash and The Haunted Mansion and Daddy Day Care and now he’s best known for being the voice of an animated ass (ahem, as in donkey)? Take note, Robin Williams.
Lonesome Jim
Directed by Steve Buscemi, starring Casey “less of a tool” Affleck and Liv Tyler, and nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at last year’s Sundance, this one seems like a pseudo-indie film lover’s dream.
Hard Candy
Maxim’s calling it, “Fatal Attraction for the new generation.” And we always trust what Maxim says. They’ve truly got their fingers on the pulse of culture over there. Well, they’ve got their fingers on something, anyway.
Water
Totally stolen from Fox Searchlight pictures: Set in 1938 Colonial India, against Mahatma Gandhi’s rise to power, WATER begins when 8-year-old Chuyia is widowed and sent to a home where Hindu widows must live in penitence. Chuyia’s feisty presence deeply affects the lives of the other residents, including a young widow, who falls for a Gandhian idealist.
*Austinist recommends. We also recommend these fine cinematic experiences: Brick, Friends with Money, Inside Man, The Notorious Bettie Page, Thank You for Smoking, V for Vendetta
