The Best Opera Ever Written?

dgcrop.jpg

This weekend, the Austin Lyric Opera presents their production of Don Giovanni, the opera which many composers and philosophers have believed to be the best opera ever. We have never seen this opera live, so are looking forward to this performance. The music will be good, because, well it is Mozart. The story is that of Don Juan, so we are all vaguely familiar with it. Don Giovanni seduces the gals and makes 'em cry, then gets his in the end. There's a little bit of everything in this opera: humor, romance, action, characters being sent to hell, etc.

We read in the Statesman this weekend that two UT music professors will be playing the roles of the Commandatore (girl's father that Don Giovanni kills/statue that comes to life) and Masetto (boyfriend of woman seduced by Don Giovanni) in the ALO production. We can't wait to see the statue of the Commandatore come to life and deal with Don Giovanni. C'mon, Kierkegaard liked it, and you might too!
